The Ostby's made it home today after two months on the road with Pum the Ox. They had a great time at Rollag.

They have moved up to Rollag, Minnesota for the annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion which starts Friday and runs through Labor Day, September 1, 2008.
August 23-27, 2008
They have been busy at the fair, marching in the daily parades and visiting with people. Orlin has had interviews with radio stations. Pum was moved across the aisle next to the door. Jon Erik Ullvang, from Haugesund, Norway walked with the family in the Saturday parade. He is an exchange student who is living with the Denn family from southern Minnesota.

Pum is located in the cattle barn next to the pig barn from August 22nd through August 27, 2008. They will be leaving for Rollag on Thursday morning. The family camper is parked northwest of the barns.

Heard from Orlin that Thomas Philbrick enjoyed his time with Pum the ox. Thomas tried various commands that he had taught Pum while training him and Pum remembered. Thomas Philbrick has 3 times been chosen New Hampshire's State Drover (one who drives cattle or sheep).
This afternoon they were in the parade at the Fair and afterwards they visited the Sesquicentennial tent. Mrs. Orville Freeman, whose husband was governor when Delmar Hagen visited them at the State Capital 50 years ago, made a special trip to the Fair today to visit with Orlin.

The Ostby's are getting ready for their last bit of their trek into the Minnesota State Fair Grounds. It sounds as if they will only be at the Fair until Sunday evening. Be sure you stop by the cattle barns to see them. I hear Pum will have a stall right by the door.

Mandy and Catherine are back with the group after taking time out to get acquainted with the newest member of the family, Anthony. Today was so warm that they decided to stay at the campground at the Elk River Gun Club and go through things and decide what they needed for their time at the Minnesota State Fair. They gave Pum a bath and got him cleaned up. Orlin heard from his sister Carol and she will be coming this week to visit. They will be going into the Fair on Wednesday and will be camping out at Canfield Gate camping area - the livestock parking/camping lots near the Cattle Barn inside the fairgrounds until the morning of the 25th. Gibbs Farm is hosting them from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the 20th, when the State Fair officials will come meet them (at 3:20 p.m.) and escort them, walking the last mile into the Larpenteur/Underwood State Fair gate. The State Fair staff will escort them to Big Top tent area to get ready for the preview event (which begins at 6:30 p.m. that Weds night). Afterwards, they will be escorted over to their camping area. The next day, August 21, the first day of the Fair, they will be escorted over to the parade start by 1:30 p.m. and come in "officially" at the fair with the 2 p.m. parade. Orlin and crew will be at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion over Labor Day weekend which is held at Rollag in Clay County of Northwestern Minnesota.

They were at a Threshing Bee at Nowthen, Minnesota and will be at Elk River Gun Club on Sunday the 17th camping.
They visited with Roger Gramstad and his sister. Jackie and Steve are back now until after Labor Day. Steve's daughter Bonnie came and spent the evening with them. The Philbrick's are coming on the 19th and Joe Mischka from Rural Heritage Magazine will also be there on the 19th. Orlin's army buddy Al Campbell from California will be stopping and visiting with them this week. They will be walking into the Minnesota State Fair grounds on the 20th of August.

Lots of new pictures are up on the site from around the Elk River area of Minnesota. Many people have stopped by to visit with the Ostby's. As it is too dangerous to walk any farther on Hiway 10, they will be hauling Pum and the Cart closer to the Fairgrounds. Law enforcement have advised them to do this.

The day was spent at the Kelley Farm listening to music and visiting with people who stopped by! Orlin had several visitors that stopped by to have pictures taken and it is said that Tommy even washed clothes!

Today Tommy, Chrstopher and Orlin were busy in Fergus Falls picking up supplies to take back to Elk River with them. They had an evening meal with the Peterson's and packed up everything they could to leave on Tuesday.

The morning of the 10th started about 8 AM as the phone started ringing the same time as the alarm went off. It was Orlin, wondering where the Rømmegrøt Cook was, as Tommy was hungry! Deb, Kris and Margit stopped at the local grocer and picked up the necessaries to make Rømmegrøt and headed out to the Peterson's. Dee Dee was kind enough to let us use her kitchen to cook the Norwegian Delicacy which did not take long to disappear once they started eating. See the picture of everyone resting on the patio after the feast!

Once again Orlin, Christopher and Tommy took Pum to the Bigwood Event Center for the Trønderlag Centennial Celebration. Many of the people in attendance came out to visit Pum and have their pictures taken with him and Orlin. In the evening, as Pum rested, Orlin and Tommy attended the banquet to celebrate the Centennial celebration. There was a fine meal served and great Norwegian entertainment.

The big news of the day is the birth of Orlin and Mandy's newest grandchild, Anthony David Hayes. He was born on August 8, 2008 at 8:00 AM. He was 9 lbs 2 oz, 22 inches long. The parents, Brian and Char are doing just fine. It sounds like the grandmothers are busy helping with the newborn.

Orlin, family & Tommy were at the Best Western Falls Inn for the Tre Lag Stevne with Pum the Ox and the Cart. Many people came out and visited with the family and gave donations towards their trip. Torill Johnsen, who is a distant Norwegian cousin of Orlin's who was here for the Tre Lag Stevne and the 100th Anniversary of the Trønderlag. The Ostby's have driven back up to Fergus Falls to attend the Tre Lag Stevne at the Best Western Falls Inn. He will have the cart and Ox on display the next couple of days. They are ahead of schedule, so are doing some visiting of places that invited him earlier this year.

Orlin, Pum and crew will be attending the Tre Lag Stevne in Fergus Falls. They will be arriving on Wednesday and have a farm place to stay at. They will be hauling Pum and the cart up to Fergus Falls and will have them on display. They are way ahead of schedule, so chose to come to where the Norwegian's will gather in Fergus Falls!

Orlin and crew will be at 10775 27th Ave SE, Becker, Sherburne County, Minnesota 55308 / 763-261-4433 at the Sherburne History Center for an interview on WCCO. They hope to get there by 10:00 AM in the morning. They are at the Bruce Steinke home yet. Orlin is talking now of going back to Fergus Falls, Minnesota for the 100 year celebration of the Trønderlag at the Tre Lag Stevne the 6th thru the 10th of August. He is thinking of being there the 8th and 9th. He said that it has been very hot for walking for them and the ox. They walked today and Thomas Thronsedt joined the group again.

Today they left from the Eystad Farm south of Randall, Minnesota and traveled down to Becker Township in Sherburne County of Minnesota and are staying at the Bruce Steinke's. Lester and June Nielsen were out today and took them all out for Church Dinner! Orlin said the food was very good and it was very nice of Lester and June to do this for all of them. They started out on Hwy 25 south and east of Little Falls and went 10+ miles today until the rain and bad weather stopped them at Foley, Minnesota. They are on their way to Becker, Minnesota and should get their on Tuesday evening? They have been busy drinking coffee and visiting with people this evening. Thomas Thronsedt will rejoin the group this week. He is a cousin of Orlin's from Jamestown, North Dakota.

Just chatted with Orlin, they are still at Eystad's. Pum was not feeling well, so they called the vet out to check him. At least he is back eating now after not eating yesterday. They will wait until he is himself again before taking off on their walk.

Too hot to walk today for the ox. They are still at the Eystad Farm south of Randall, Minnesota. They have had many visitors. Thomas Philbrick from New Hampshire is coming on the 19th of August to walk with with the Ostby family and Pum.

They will be walking through Little Falls tomorrow and will be looking for a farm to stay at for a couple of nights. All is going well, and it has been very hot.

Steve and Jackie headed back up north and will be back on Saturday to walk. The television station from St. Cloud was out and interviewed them and also the local newspaper.

The Ostby Crew plus Steve and Jackie made it to the Eystad Farm south of Randall, Minnesota today. Many of the local neighbors stopped by to visit with them. They only have about 100 miles to go to the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, so are way ahead of schedule. Today they walked from Lincoln, MN to Cushing, MN. They will be staying at the Historical Oliver H. Kelley Farm for a few days near the north end of the Twin Cities along Hiway 10.

We were all up early and had our oatmeal and rolls for breakfast before starting the walk of the day. We loaded up and headed towards Motley to start our walk. The morning was nice and cool, but had no breeze, so it did not take long to get warmed up. We headed towards Lincoln, MN, which seemed to be up hill the whole way. There were a few who stopped and visited with us and gave donations towards the family's expenses and bought buttons. I made it 5 miles walking, and then I had to quit, I got too warm. The rest of them went the whole day and stopped in Lincoln. While they finished the walk for the day, I rode along with Mandy and Orlin to find a new place to park for the next couple of days. They were lucky enough to find a norwegian gentleman who lived south of Randall that was willing to have them stay on his farm. They were planning on moving there on Monday.
On our way back to camp, we stopped at Morrey's Fish Shop at Motley where they bought some huge shrimp, salmon and other delicacies. Mandy fixed them all on the grill along with onions and potatoes and we had a feast!

On Saturday, the Ostby camp increased by a few. Steve and Jackie came back for a few days, Lyle and Margit Bakke and Dave Steichen came for the evening and to walk the next day. We had a great evening meal with the Ostby's and then visited with Joe, Barb and Joe's father. Mandy got to meet another cousin of hers from the Staples area.

Friday, they made it to Motley. They also moved to Joe & Barb's place by Staples. Barb is a cousin to Mandy and boy were they excited to meet each other. Barb had her family over Friday evening to meet the Ostby's.

Orlin calle a little bit ago. He said they may be in Motley on Saturday night, depending upon how it goes the next two days. They made Verndale today. I guess there are no rides at the Wadena Fair this year. All is going well and Pum is back eating all his feed now.

Orlin called this evening. They made it to Wadena walking today. They will continue walking east of Wadena on Hwy 10 and haul back to Wadena at night where the camper is. We will be going to join them on Saturday.

Orlin called and they moved to Finn Creek by New York Mills and are staying there. In the evening they had supper with the Finnish people who were there and got a taste of Finnish food. They asked Orlin to speak to them about his trip so far and how it has been going. They have met so many wonderful people along the trail and have appreciated all the dontations they have received. Everything has been going pretty good, Christopher and Catherine were sick a couple of days. Tom Thronset has left the group for a few days to attend family events. Steve and Jackie rejoined the group on Saturday.

I just talked to Orlin, they made their 10 miles today. They hauled the cart and Pum back west of Perham and are just about back at Perham, he thought about at mile marker 68 or so on Hwy 10. They will start from there tomorrow.
They were having supper with the Daggett family.

The Ostby's arrived on Tuesday at the Bakke home at rural Flom, Minnesota. We had a great evening meal and visit with several of the area neighbors. On Wednesday morning, they took off for their walk, only to have to postpone until the afternoon as there was much lightning.
On Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, they were sent off on their walks with a tummy full of Rommegrøt.
By Thursday, they had made their way to Lake Park, Minnesota. I am not sure of their immediate destination. You could probably check with the family about where they are this evening.
Orlin was given a great picture of Delmar Hagen that was taken in 1958 while he was on his walk from Pembina, ND to St. Paul, MN.
The Swenson twins were over each night to visit with Orlin & family, as they are related.
We have had a busy week Tuesday we were at Carpenters Corner and prairie public TV came out and did an interview. then on wed we went to huet park by redlake then on thur we went about 5 miles but pum got sick so we brought him back to huet and had the vet look at him and he got better before the next day. on fri we made it to the Fertile fair we stayed there for 3 nights fri,sat,sun and made a couple good donations. after that we headed out on mon and made it to Gary then Tuesday we came to Twin Valley

They were at the Polk County Fair in Fertile, Minnesota resting after their long walk from Pembina. They observed the dedication of the Veteran's monument at Fertile, there are some pictures included in the slide show.

We have not been able to up date on our web site, as our air card for the lap top did not work well in northwestern Minnesota, but neither did our cell phones.
We have been on the trail since July 1, 2008, left Pembina about 10:00 am on our way to Northcote, MN then on to Hallock,stayed at the Youngren's farm,and the Hilde farm then on to Florian -and the Marshall County Park off to Old Mill State Park rested for 2 nights, we are northwest of Viking, MN
We have had such a wonderful time so far Pum is doing well everyone asks about Pum.
He is getting pretty smart though when a car or pick-up truck stops he stops too he knows that people are going to pet him and take his picture he is such a ham. But we love him anyway.

We made our first trek today 10 miles out from Pembina, ND and St Vincent, MN on our way to Hallock, MN. We should arrive there sometime tomorrow in the early afternoon. We plan to take off early in the morning to stay out of the mid-day heat. Pum (the ox) in doing good, and should be ready to go tomorrow. Happy Trails.

The Ostby Crew plus Steve and Jackie made it to the Eystad Farm south of Randall, Minnesota today. Many of the local neighbors stopped by to visit with them. They only have about 100 miles to go to the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, so are way ahead of schedule. Today they walked from Lincoln, MN to Cushing, MN. They will be staying at the Historical Oliver H. Kelley Farm for a few days near the north end of the Twin Cities along Hiway 10.

We were all up early and had our oatmeal and rolls for breakfast before starting the walk of the day. We loaded up and headed towards Motley to start our walk. The morning was nice and cool, but had no breeze, so it did not take long to get warmed up. We headed towards Lincoln, MN, which seemed to be up hill the whole way. There were a few who stopped and visited with us and gave donations towards the family's expenses and bought buttons. I made it 5 miles walking, and then I had to quit, I got too warm. The rest of them went the whole day and stopped in Lincoln. While they finished the walk for the day, I rode along with Mandy and Orlin to find a new place to park for the next couple of days. They were lucky enough to find a norwegian gentleman who lived south of Randall that was willing to have them stay on his farm. They were planning on moving there on Monday.
On our way back to camp, we stopped at Morrey's Fish Shop at Motley where they bought some huge shrimp, salmon and other delicacies. Mandy fixed them all on the grill along with onions and potatoes and we had a feast!

On Saturday, the Ostby camp increased by a few. Steve and Jackie came back for a few days, Lyle and Margit Bakke and Dave Steichen came for the evening and to walk the next day. We had a great evening meal with the Ostby's and then visited with Joe, Barb and Joe's father. Mandy got to meet another cousin of hers from the Staples area.

Friday, they made it to Motley. They also moved to Joe & Barb's place by Staples. Barb is a cousin to Mandy and boy were they excited to meet each other. Barb had her family over Friday evening to meet the Ostby's.

Orlin calle a little bit ago. He said they may be in Motley on Saturday night, depending upon how it goes the next two days. They made Verndale today. I guess there are no rides at the Wadena Fair this year. All is going well and Pum is back eating all his feed now.

Orlin called this evening. They made it to Wadena walking today. They will continue walking east of Wadena on Hwy 10 and haul back to Wadena at night where the camper is. We will be going to join them on Saturday.

Orlin called and they moved to Finn Creek by New York Mills and are staying there. In the evening they had supper with the Finnish people who were there and got a taste of Finnish food. They asked Orlin to speak to them about his trip so far and how it has been going. They have met so many wonderful people along the trail and have appreciated all the dontations they have received. Everything has been going pretty good, Christopher and Catherine were sick a couple of days. Tom Thronset has left the group for a few days to attend family events. Steve and Jackie rejoined the group on Saturday.

I just talked to Orlin, they made their 10 miles today. They hauled the cart and Pum back west of Perham and are just about back at Perham, he thought about at mile marker 68 or so on Hwy 10. They will start from there tomorrow.
They were having supper with the Daggett family.

Orlin called a little bit ago. They are at Perham, Minnesota at the Fair this afternoon and evening.
They have rain and are not traveling today.

The Ostby's arrived on Tuesday at the Bakke home at rural Flom, Minnesota. We had a great evening meal and visit with several of the area neighbors. On Wednesday morning, they took off for their walk, only to have to postpone until the afternoon as there was much lightning.
On Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, they were sent off on their walks with a tummy full of Rommegrøt.
By Thursday, they had made their way to Lake Park, Minnesota. I am not sure of their immediate destination. You could probably check with the family about where they are this evening.Orlin was given a great picture of Delmar Hagen that was taken in 1958 while he was on his walk from Pembina, ND to St. Paul, MN.
The Swenson twins were over each night to visit with Orlin & family, as they are related.
We have had a busy week Tuesday we were at Carpenters Corner and prairie public TV came out and did an interview. then on wed we went to huet park by redlake then on thur we went about 5 miles but pum got sick so we brought him back to huet and had the vet look at him and he got better before the next day. on fri we made it to the Fertile fair we stayed there for 3 nights fri,sat,sun and made a couple good donations. after that we headed out on mon and made it to Gary then Tuesday we came to Twin ValleyJuly11th - July 14th, 2008
They were at the Polk County Fair in Fertile, Minnesota resting after their long walk from Pembina. They observed the dedication of the Veteran's monument at Fertile, there are some pictures included in the slide show.

Hello to all from the Pembina Trail
We have not been able to up date on our web site, as our air card for the lap top did not work well in northwestern Minnesota, but neither did our cell phones.
We have been on the trail since July 1, 2008, left Pembina about 10:00 am on our way to Northcote, MN then on to Hallock,stayed at the Youngren's farm,and the Hilde farm then on to Florian -and the Marshall County Park off to Old Mill State Park rested for 2 nights, we are northwest of Viking, MN
We have had such a wonderful time so far Pum is doing well everyone asks about Pum.
He is getting pretty smart though when a car or pick-up truck stops he stops too he knows that people are going to pet him and take his picture he is such a ham. But we love him anyway.

We made our first trek today 10 miles out from Pembina, ND and St Vincent, MN on our way to Hallock, MN. We should arrive there sometime tomorrow in the early afternoon. We plan to take off early in the morning to stay out of the mid-day heat. Pum (the ox) in doing good, and should be ready to go tomorrow. Happy Trails.
